« Despite everything, pictures are just things and being an artist is not a definitive conquest. It's more like a raid through the unfathomable. »
German painter Florian Pelka was born in 1971 in Berlin, where he still lives and works today. From 1991 to 1997 he studied philosophy and literature at the FU Berlin and the Université Paris VIII. From 1994 to 2000 he studied Fine Arts at the University of the Arts in Berlin with Georg Baselitz and earned the title of master student here.
Portrait of Florian Pelka
From philosophy to art
More interested in the questions than in the answers, as he's always been, Florian Pelka's artistic journey begins with the study of philosophy and literature. The realization that despite everything, there is no objective truth to grasp, and that one continues to be amazed at human existence in its contradictions, its half-heartedness and its absurdity, has ultimately brought him to art. Florian Pelka describes the act of painting as the happiness of creating unexpected events in a sensual way.
Coincidences and catastrophes
In his works, Florian Pelka creates an interplay between material and shape, abstract pictorial space and figurative narrative. The engine is the material aesthetic of solid, liquid, scraped or running paint. The viewer of his pictures discovers various motives such as symbolic governors of humans in the form of animals, cultural heritage through art historical quotes or modern icons of our lifeworld in the information age. In a mostly radiant, sometimes romantic colorfulness, prismatic effects result. The contrasts of grotesquely juxtaposed motifs are combined in the shimmering and glowing of the maelstrom.
An internationally recognized artist
Florian Pelka's pictures have been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Europe and South Korea and accompanied by catalogs. They were exhibited in public institutions such as art associations and museums, as well as in many private galleries. His works can be found in renowned collections, including those of the Willy-Brandt-Haus, the Berlin Senate Administration or in the SÖR-Rusche collection.
