Tomi Ungerer (1931-2019) was an internationally distinguished artist, author and illustrator, who grew up in France and lived in various parts of the world including New York, Nova Scotia and Ireland. His body of work jumped across genres and defied categorization, and he navigated each style and project with wit, precision and expert storytelling: from the satirical to the macabre to the optimistically imaginative. Ungerer was also a committed humanitarian, who championed - both in art and life - a number of important causes and campaigns, including European integration and reconciliation, denouncement of the war in Vietnam and nuclear disarmament. He is remembered for his unmatched illustrative originality and generous spirit.
